A tooth injury while traveling: how to arrange follow-up at home

Published October 20, 2026

In short

Before you leave the treating office or emergency department, ask for a written summary (what tooth, what injury, what was done, any splint and when it should come off, x-rays in digital form), then call your home dentist promptly, because dental injuries need scheduled follow-up checks even when the tooth feels fine.

Emergency routing, there and here

If any of these apply, this is not a dental-office problem first: trouble breathing or swallowing, rapidly spreading swelling of the face or neck, fever with facial swelling, bleeding that will not stop, or a serious injury to the head or jaw. Call 911 or go to the nearest emergency department. Do not use the appointment request form for these. A knocked-out tooth needs care within the hour wherever you are (OHF).

Why follow-up matters

An injured tooth can lose its nerve weeks or months later without pain, show root changes on x-ray, or loosen as a splint is removed. Checks at intervals set by the dentist catch these early. The American Dental Association's emergency guidance covers dental injuries (ADA).

What to get before you leave the treating office

ItemWhy
Written summary: tooth, injury type, treatmentTells your dentist what was done
Splint details and removal dateSplints are removed on a schedule
X-rays, digitalBaseline for comparison (ADA)
Medications given or prescribedAvoids duplication
Materials used, if any restoration was placedFor future repair
Contact details of the treating clinicianQuestions later

When you get home

Call your dentist within days; send the summary ahead; book the follow-up; report any pain, color change, looseness, swelling or a gum pimple between visits.

Typical follow-up pattern

Checks over the first weeks, then months, with nerve tests and x-rays at intervals the dentist sets; no fixed schedule is stated here as a practice fact. A tooth that darkens or stops responding may need root canal treatment.

Insurance and records

Keep receipts and the summary for travel insurance; ask the home office what records it needs. The studio's contact page can receive a summary ahead of a visit (studio).

Next step: Request a consultation or call (805) 565-5111. A request is not a confirmed appointment; the office confirms times during its listed hours (Monday to Thursday, 8 am to 5 pm, plus select Fridays).
