Can adults benefit from dental sealants?

Published October 20, 2026

In short

Sometimes. A sealant is a thin resin or glass ionomer coating bonded into the deep grooves of a back tooth to keep plaque out. Most research and public-health programs focus on children's newly erupted molars, but an adult with deep, uncavitated grooves, a higher decay risk, or an early non-cavitated lesion in a groove may also be a candidate, and the American Dental Association's nonrestorative guideline supports sealing such lesions on permanent teeth.

What changes the answer

Whether the groove is sound, stained or has an early lesion; whether the tooth already has a filling; decay risk (dry mouth, frequent sugar, past cavities, orthodontic appliances); and whether the tooth can be kept dry for bonding.

What sealants do and do not do

They keep plaque out of grooves a brush cannot clean. They do not protect between the teeth or at the gum line, do not treat cavitated decay, and wear over years, so they are checked at visits and repaired. The FDA lists sealants among decay treatment options (FDA).

Who may be a candidate

Deep grooves, no decay, high riskOften
Early non-cavitated groove lesionOften, as the ADA guideline supports
Stained groove, arrested, low riskMonitor
Groove already filledNo; the filling covers it
Cavitated decayRestoration

Safety

Sealants have been used for decades; the ADA has reviewed questions about trace bisphenol A exposure and found it transient and far below levels of concern. Ask the dentist about the material if you have questions.

Procedure

Cleaning, etching, placing and curing the sealant, then checking the bite. No drilling for a sound groove. Minutes per tooth.

Questions to ask

Which of my teeth have deep grooves? Is there an early lesion? Do I have risk factors that make sealing worthwhile? How will they be checked? Fluoride toothpaste and interdental cleaning remain the base (NIDCR).

Next step: Request a consultation or call (805) 565-5111. A request is not a confirmed appointment; the office confirms times during its listed hours (Monday to Thursday, 8 am to 5 pm, plus select Fridays).
