Can you have a dental exam without committing to treatment?
Yes. An examination is a diagnostic visit, and the American Dental Association's Code of Ethics recognizes the patient's right to be informed and to decide, including to decline or defer treatment after hearing the options and risks. Say when you book that you want an exam and conversation first; treatment is a separate decision.
What an exam-only visit usually includes
Health and medication history; examination of the teeth, gums, bite and soft tissues; imaging only where indicated (ADA); findings explained; a written plan you can take home with watch items, options and an order of priority.
What changes the answer
A symptom that needs attention now, such as pain, swelling or a loose tooth, may be treated at the same visit if you agree; infection is not deferred safely.
If any of these apply, this is not a dental-office problem first: trouble breathing or swallowing, rapidly spreading swelling of the face or neck, fever with facial swelling, bleeding that will not stop, or a serious injury to the head or jaw. Call 911 or go to the nearest emergency department. Do not use the appointment request form for these.
How to say it
"I'd like an exam and a conversation first. I'll decide about treatment afterward." On the request form or by phone. The team should record what it finds and plan from there without pressure.
What you can ask for
A written plan; the reason for each item; what happens if each is deferred; the order the dentist would do things and why; a second opinion; time to think.
What a good plan looks like
Items grouped by urgency: needs attention soon; should be planned; could be monitored; optional or cosmetic. Each with a reason and, if you ask, a fee in writing; this page does not state fees.
When deferring carries risk
A cracked tooth, deep decay near the nerve, or active gum disease tend to progress; the dentist should say plainly what deferral risks. The decision remains yours.
The studio lists examinations and consultations among its services (studio).
Next step: Request a consultation or call (805) 565-5111. A request is not a confirmed appointment; the office confirms times during its listed hours (Monday to Thursday, 8 am to 5 pm, plus select Fridays).
