Crown repair versus crown replacement

Published October 20, 2026

In short

A small chip in the porcelain with a closed margin and a healthy tooth underneath can often be smoothed or patched with bonded composite. Replacement is usually considered when there is decay at the margin, a crack in the tooth under the crown, a large fracture exposing the inner framework or tooth, an open or worn margin, a crown that keeps coming loose, or a tooth that needs root canal treatment through the crown and the crown is compromised.

Only an examination, usually with an x-ray, tells which applies.

Why crowns chip or fail

Grinding and clenching, a heavy bite, trauma, material and thickness, and the age of the cement.

Limits of a repair

Composite bonded to ceramic or metal can stain or wear faster than the original and is often a medium-term fix. A polish is not the same as a patch, and neither addresses a bite that caused the chip.

What the examination checks

Margin, decay, crack testing, bite contacts, and an x-ray where indicated. The Oral Health Foundation notes that crowns can last many years with care but may need replacing (OHF).

Questions to ask

What caused the damage? Will the repair protect the tooth, or only the appearance? How long do you expect a repair to hold? If replaced, would the same material be used?

Next step: Request a consultation or call (805) 565-5111. A request is not a confirmed appointment; the office confirms times during its listed hours (Monday to Thursday, 8 am to 5 pm, plus select Fridays).
