Front teeth first or back teeth first: how clinicians choose a sequence
There is no single correct order, but the sequence usually follows dependencies rather than appearance: disease and pain are controlled first, then the bite (the height at which the back teeth meet and the way the jaw closes) is established and tested in temporaries, and the front teeth are shaped to work within that bite. Back teeth are often finalized before or together with the front teeth because front-tooth length and overlap depend on the bite height the back teeth hold; some plans finalize the front teeth first for esthetic or protective reasons.
Your dentist should explain which dependency drives your order.
The four dependencies
- Health before restoration. Gum disease, decay and infection are treated first (NIDCR).
- Support before esthetics. Back teeth hold the bite height; the front teeth's length and overlap are set relative to it.
- A tested bite before final materials. The new bite is worn in temporaries and adjusted until comfortable; only then are finals made.
- Protection of what has been done. Front teeth guide the jaw during sideways movements and protect the back teeth; back teeth protect the front teeth from overload when closing.
Common sequences
| Sequence | Why it is chosen |
|---|---|
| Back teeth, then front | Bite height must be set before front-tooth length can be finalized |
| Front and back together in provisionals, then finals in groups | Whole arch tested at once; finals made quadrant by quadrant |
| Front first | A front tooth is failing or fractured; esthetic urgency; the bite height is not changing |
| Implants early, restorations later | Integration time runs in parallel with other treatment |
What changes the order
Whether the bite height is changing; which teeth are urgent; implant healing; laboratory logistics; your priorities.
Questions to ask
Is my bite height changing? Which teeth depend on which? Why this order for me? What will I look like at each stage, and how long are the provisionals in place?
The studio describes reconstruction as a sequenced plan (studio).
