Replacing a front-tooth crown without changing your smile
Usually yes. A replacement front crown can be designed to blend with its neighbors, but matching is planned, not automatic: shade is chosen against your natural teeth in good light before the tooth is numbed and dried, and the shape, length and gum line are copied from the old crown or deliberately corrected.
What changes the answer
- The color of the tooth underneath: a dark or metal core shows through thinner, translucent ceramics, and laboratory studies find the underlying substrate the strongest influence on final color
- The cement shade
- Gum recession that has exposed an old margin or a gray line
- Wear or staining of the neighboring teeth
- Whether you want to whiten first; whitening does not change crown color, so it comes before shade matching (ADA)
What the dentist records
Photographs with a shade tab, the old crown's length and shape, your bite, and the gum position. A temporary crown lets you test shape and length before the final is made; say what you want changed while it is a temporary.
Why one crown is harder than several
A single tooth must mimic natural variation: translucency at the edge, slight color bands, surface texture. Several crowns together only need to match each other. See the companion guide on matching one front tooth.
Choices to discuss
Copy the old crown exactly, or correct something you never liked: length, a flat edge, a dark line at the gum. Milled or hand-layered ceramic. Whether the neighbors would benefit from whitening or polishing first. The Oral Health Foundation notes that crown materials for front teeth are chosen with appearance in mind (OHF).
Realistic expectations
Invisible in conversation is the goal. Ask to see the try-in in daylight and to compare with a photograph of the old crown.
Next step: Request a consultation or call (805) 565-5111. A request is not a confirmed appointment; the office confirms times during its listed hours (Monday to Thursday, 8 am to 5 pm, plus select Fridays).
