Speaking differently after major dental work: what to report

Published October 20, 2026

In short

Speech often changes for a while after front teeth, the roof of the mouth near them, or the bite height are altered, because the tongue, lips and air stream were tuned to the old shapes. Sounds like s, z, f, v and th are the most sensitive. Small studies and reviews report that most people adapt over days to weeks, and the provisional phase exists partly so that sounds which do not settle can be corrected by reshaping before the final restorations are made.

Report what you notice early; it is easier to adjust a temporary than a finished tooth.

How teeth shape speech

The upper front teeth and the palate just behind them are fixed landmarks the tongue and lower lip use. Longer front teeth change f and v; thicker palatal surfaces change s and z; closed gaps change where air escapes; a raised bite changes the resting position of the jaw and tongue.

Expected adaptation versus signs worth reporting

Usually settlesReport early
Slight lisp in the first daysA whistle on s sounds that is not improving after a couple of weeks
Awareness of the teeth when talkingAir escaping, or spitting on certain sounds
Tongue catching the edges at firstBiting the lip or cheek repeatedly
Tiredness when speaking a lotA sound others comment on that is not changing

What the dentist can do

Reshape the palatal surface or edge of a temporary, adjust the length, or change the contour where the tongue lands. Reading a sentence aloud with s, z, f, v and th sounds in the chair helps locate the problem.

How to practice

Read aloud daily; speak on the phone; notice which sounds improve. Keep a short list of words that trip. If you work with your voice professionally, say so at the planning stage.

Timing

Speech is tested during the provisional phase, before finals are made. The studio describes provisionals as the testing stage of reconstruction (studio).

Next step: Request a consultation or call (805) 565-5111. A request is not a confirmed appointment; the office confirms times during its listed hours (Monday to Thursday, 8 am to 5 pm, plus select Fridays).

Speech comfort tracking sheet

Test sentence: "Sixty-six fresh fish, very fine, sat on the thin, thick shelf."

Bring this to the next visit. Report early if a sound is not improving after two weeks, air escapes, or you bite your lip or cheek repeatedly.
