What a dental appointment should include before cosmetic treatment

Published October 20, 2026

In short

Before any cosmetic treatment, the appointment should establish that the mouth is healthy enough to build on: a health and medication history, an examination of every tooth for decay and failing restorations, gum measurements, a bite and wear check, x-rays where indicated, photographs or a digital scan, and a conversation about what you want to change and which option (whitening, bonding, veneers, alignment) actually addresses it. Cosmetic work placed over untreated decay, inflamed gums or an unstable bite tends to fail early.

What changes the answer

Active gum disease is treated first (NIDCR); grinding changes material and design (NIDCR); decay and failing restorations are repaired first; whitening comes before any shade matching (ADA); alignment may change what veneers or bonding need to do.

The components

ComponentWhy
Health and medication historyHealing, bleeding, sensitivities
Tooth-by-tooth examDecay and failing restorations under cosmetic work fail early
Gum measurementsBonding to bleeding gum is unreliable; gum line stability matters
Bite and wearVeneers and bonding chip under heavy contact
X-rays where indicatedHidden decay, root and bone condition (ADA)
Photographs or scanPlanning, mock-ups, records
ConversationWhat you want; which option fits; what each removes or keeps (ADA)

Questions to bring

What do I want changed: color, shape, alignment, gaps, gum line? Which option addresses that with the least tooth removal? What has to be healthy first? How will I preview the result? What maintenance follows?

Red flags

Cosmetic work proposed without an examination of the whole mouth, no gum measurements, no mention of your bite, or pressure to decide the same day.

The studio describes a planning consultation before cosmetic treatment (studio).

Next step: Request a consultation or call (805) 565-5111. A request is not a confirmed appointment; the office confirms times during its listed hours (Monday to Thursday, 8 am to 5 pm, plus select Fridays).
