What can you learn from a veneer mock-up before committing?
A mock-up is a temporary preview of proposed veneers, made from a model or digital design and placed over your unprepared teeth as removable resin. You can see and feel the planned length, shape and fullness in your own face before enamel is touched.
It shows lip support, tooth length, how the smile looks in photos and how speech sounds with the new edges, and it lets you ask for changes. It cannot show final color or translucency precisely, and it does not guarantee the finished veneers, because preparation and laboratory work still follow.
The kinds of preview
- Wax-up on a model. The proposed shapes carved on a plaster or printed model of your teeth. Good for seeing proportions from outside the mouth.
- Digital smile design. The proposed shapes drawn over photographs of your face and teeth.
- Intraoral mock-up. Resin shaped from the design and placed over your teeth, so you wear the plan. At Loul Dental Studio this wearable stage comes before any preparation (studio).
What to evaluate while it is in place
- Tooth length at rest and when smiling
- Where the edges sit against your lower lip
- Speech sounds, especially f, v, s and th
- Lip comfort at rest and when smiling
- Symmetry and how much tooth shows
- Whether your teeth meet comfortably when you close
What a mock-up cannot tell you
The final shade and translucency: mock-up resin is a single color, and porcelain is layered. How your gums respond to the final margins. How your bite tolerates the new shapes over months.
Using the mock-up to make decisions
Many people decide to treat fewer teeth, shorten the planned edges, or whiten first so the final porcelain can be more translucent. Porcelain does not lighten later, so whitening questions are settled before the shade is chosen (ADA).
Questions to ask
- How are the changes I ask for carried into the final design?
- Will the temporaries after preparation match the mock-up?
- What about this preview will differ in porcelain?
- Can I take the mock-up photos and video home to decide?
The ADA's guidance that veneer treatment is not reversible once enamel is removed is the reason this stage matters (ADA).
