A chipped front tooth before an important event: treatment questions

Published October 20, 2026

In short

Most small chips in front teeth can be repaired, and the size and depth of the chip, whether the nerve is exposed or the tooth is sensitive, whether the tooth is loose, and your bite decide the option: smoothing and polishing for a tiny edge chip, tooth-colored bonding for a small to moderate chip, a veneer or crown when the loss is larger or the tooth is already heavily restored, and nerve treatment first if the pulp is exposed. Timing depends on the examination, so ask the office what is realistic rather than assuming a single visit.

What changes the answer

Pain, cold sensitivity or a visible pink spot (nerve involvement); a loose or displaced tooth (injury to the root or bone); a chip after a blow versus from biting; existing bonding or a veneer on that tooth; grinding; how much time before the event.

If any of these apply, this is not a dental-office problem first: trouble breathing or swallowing, rapidly spreading swelling of the face or neck, fever with facial swelling, bleeding that will not stop, or a serious injury to the head or jaw. Call 911 or go to the nearest emergency department. Do not use the appointment request form for these.

Timing questions for the office

What can be done before the event, and what should wait? Can a temporary or bonding carry me through, with the definitive repair later? Will whitening or shade matching be affected? Is the tooth stable enough to restore now?

What to do now

Keep the fragment moist in milk or saliva if it is large; avoid biting on the tooth; cover a sharp edge with wax; call the office during listed hours. The American Dental Association's emergency guidance covers chipped teeth (ADA).

Expectations

Bonding can match well but may need polishing or replacement over time; a chipped tooth that was injured needs follow-up checks even after repair.

Next step: Request a consultation or call (805) 565-5111. A request is not a confirmed appointment; the office confirms times during its listed hours (Monday to Thursday, 8 am to 5 pm, plus select Fridays).
