Why one dental treatment plan may include a specialist
Dentistry has ADA-recognized specialties: endodontics, periodontics, oral and maxillofacial surgery, orthodontics, prosthodontics, pediatric dentistry, oral and maxillofacial pathology and radiology, oral medicine, dental anesthesiology, orofacial pain, and dental public health. A general dentist may include a specialist for a step that is unusually complex, that benefits from the specialist's additional training or equipment, or that the ADA Code of Ethics' consultation-and-referral principle calls for. A referral is coordination of care, not a sign that something went wrong.
Who does what
| Specialist | Typical role in a plan |
|---|---|
| Endodontist | Complex or repeat root canals; cracked teeth (AAE) |
| Periodontist | Gum surgery, grafts, bone regeneration, some implants (AAP) |
| Oral surgeon | Difficult extractions, jaw surgery, some implants, sedation |
| Orthodontist | Complex tooth and jaw alignment (ADA) |
| Prosthodontist | Complex restorations and full-mouth cases (ACP) |
| Pediatric dentist | Children with complex needs |
| Oral medicine / pathology | Mouth lesions and medical conditions affecting the mouth |
| Orofacial pain | Persistent jaw and facial pain |
What changes the answer
Complexity, your medical history, the equipment needed, the general dentist's experience with the case type, and your preference.
How it is coordinated
The general dentist usually remains the coordinator: writes the referral with records, agrees the sequence, receives the specialist's report, and completes the restorative work. Ask who the point of contact is.
Questions to ask
Why this specialist for this step? What will they do, and what comes back to you? Who schedules what, and in which order? What records go with me? How do fees for each office work; both provide written plans, and this page states none.
The studio works with specialists where a plan benefits from them (studio).
Next step: Request a consultation or call (805) 565-5111. A request is not a confirmed appointment; the office confirms times during its listed hours (Monday to Thursday, 8 am to 5 pm, plus select Fridays).
