Annual maximum, deductible, and coinsurance in dental benefits
The deductible is the amount you pay before the plan begins paying; coinsurance is the percentage split between plan and patient once the deductible is met; the annual maximum is the most the plan will pay in a benefit year, after which you pay the rest. Together they explain why a plan can "cover" a procedure yet leave a large share to you, and why the same treatment can cost you different amounts in December and January.
The terms, with an illustration
The amounts below are placeholders to show the arithmetic, not fees or plan figures.
| Term | Meaning | Illustration (placeholder numbers) |
|---|---|---|
| Deductible | You pay this first each benefit year | Plan deductible 50 units; a 200-unit procedure: you pay 50 before coinsurance applies |
| Coinsurance | Percentage split after the deductible | Plan pays 80 percent of the remaining 150 (120); you pay 20 percent (30) |
| Copayment | Fixed amount per visit or procedure in some plans | A flat 25 units per visit |
| Annual maximum | Most the plan pays per year | If the maximum is 1,000 and the plan has already paid 950, it pays 50 toward the next item; you pay the rest |
| Waiting period | Time after enrollment before some services are covered | Major services after 12 months, for example |
| Frequency limit | How often a service is covered | Two cleanings per year, bitewings every so many months |
Why timing matters
Deductibles and maximums reset each benefit year. Treatment that spans two years may use two deductibles or two maximums; the office can sometimes sequence phases around the reset, but clinical need comes first.
Why "covered" is not "paid in full"
Coverage means the procedure is eligible; the deductible, coinsurance percentage, maximum, and the plan's allowed amount (which may be less than the office fee) all shape what remains.
Questions for the plan
Deductible amount and whether it applies to preventive care; coinsurance percentages by category; annual maximum and how much remains; waiting periods; frequency limits; the benefit year dates.
This page does not state fees. The studio provides written plans with procedure codes so you can check them with your plan (studio).
Next step: Request a consultation or call (805) 565-5111. A request is not a confirmed appointment; the office confirms times during its listed hours (Monday to Thursday, 8 am to 5 pm, plus select Fridays).

| Term | My plan's figure (ask the plan) |

| Benefit year dates | |
| Deductible (and whether preventive is exempt) | |
| Coinsurance: preventive / basic / major | |
| Annual maximum, and remaining | |
| Waiting periods | |
| Frequency limits |
Worked example with placeholders: procedure 200; deductible 50; plan pays 80% of 150 = 120; I pay 50 + 30 = 80 (if the maximum has room).
