Fixed versus removable retainers

Published October 20, 2026

In short

Neither type is proven better for everyone. Both hold teeth where treatment left them only while they are in place and intact, and the 2023 Cochrane review found no moderate- or high-certainty evidence favoring one approach. The choice usually turns on which teeth moved, how far, how reliably you will wear a removable device, how you clean between teeth, and what the clinician planning your case recommends.

What each type is

A fixed retainer is a thin wire bonded behind the front teeth, usually the lower six and sometimes the upper. A removable retainer is a clear vacuum-formed tray or a wire-and-acrylic plate you take out to eat and brush. The American Dental Association describes retainers as holding teeth after treatment (ADA).

Limits of each

A fixed wire can come loose unnoticed and a tooth can move while it looks attached; it needs checking at visits. A removable retainer only works in the mouth and can be lost or cracked. Some plans use both: a bonded wire plus a nightly tray.

Suitability questions

Which of my teeth are most likely to relapse? Can I clean around a wire daily? Will I wear a tray every night for years? Do I grind?

Consultation checklist

Ask what the clinician recommends and why, how the retainer will be checked, how to tell if a bonded wire has failed, and what replacement involves.

Next step: Request a consultation or call (805) 565-5111. A request is not a confirmed appointment; the office confirms times during its listed hours (Monday to Thursday, 8 am to 5 pm, plus select Fridays).
