Why retainers matter after teeth straightening

Published October 20, 2026

In short

Retainers hold teeth in their new positions while the bone and gum fibers around them reorganize, and because teeth keep drifting slowly throughout life, most dentists now advise some form of long-term, often nightly, retention rather than a fixed end date.

The three retainer types

TypeWhat it isTrade-offs
Clear removable trayA thin clear tray over all the teethNearly invisible; must be remembered; can crack or cloud; removed to eat
Wire-and-acrylic removableA plate with a wire across the front teethDurable and adjustable; more visible; removed to eat
Bonded (fixed) wireA thin wire glued behind the front teethAlways working; harder to floss; can debond without you noticing

Cochrane reviews found no single best method, so the choice is individualized. The American Dental Association notes that retainers are part of orthodontic treatment (ADA).

A typical plan

Full-time wear at first, then nights, as prescribed; the dentist sets the schedule and adjusts it. When wear lapses, the retainer feels tight; if it still seats fully, consistent wear usually settles it over days. A retainer that will not seat, rocks or hurts should not be forced.

Caring for retainers

Clean removable retainers daily with a soft brush and mild cleaner, never hot water; floss under a bonded wire with a threader or interdental brush (NIDCR); keep retainers in a case, away from pets and heat; replace a worn or cracked retainer promptly.
