Can clear aligners close every type of tooth gap?

Published October 20, 2026

In short

Not every type. Aligners can often close small to moderate spaces between teeth, especially the common gap between the upper front teeth. A gap left by a missing tooth, a gap caused by a size mismatch between teeth, a gap held open by a thick band of gum tissue or a tongue habit, and large spaces are each handled differently.

An examination sorts out which kind you have.

Gap types

TypeWhat is usually behind itWhat aligners can doWhat else may be needed
Natural spacingTeeth slightly small for the archOften closeRetention
Midline gapThick gum band, habit, or spacingOften closeSometimes a small gum procedure; retention
Gap after a lost toothNeighbors driftingCan sometimes close small gaps or hold spaceImplant or bridge for larger spaces

The American Dental Association describes orthodontics as treating spacing as well as crowding, with the approach chosen for the case (ADA).

What the studies say

Space closure is one of the more variable movements for aligners; mild spacing is more predictable than severe spacing, and larger closures often need attachments, longer wear or refinements.

Why gaps reopen

Without retention, teeth drift back. A midline gap held by a gum band tends to reopen unless the band is addressed. A bonded retainer behind the front teeth is often used after closing spaces.

Questions to ask

What kind of gap do I have? Will the space close, or be redistributed and then restored? What will hold it closed? Do my gums or bone need attention first?
