What to ask an out-of-network dental office before booking

Published October 20, 2026

In short

Ask five things before booking any office whose network status you do not know: whether the office participates in your specific plan, how it bills (does it submit claims or give you the paperwork to submit), how the plan's allowed amount for out-of-network care compares with the office's fee and who pays the difference, whether a written treatment plan with procedure codes and a pre-treatment estimate are available, and what happens with payment timing. The answers, not the label, tell you what your share is likely to be.

Terms in plain language

  • Network: offices that have agreed to the plan's fee schedule
  • Allowed amount: what the plan uses as the basis for payment; out of network, it may be lower than the office fee
  • Balance billing: the office charging you the difference between its fee and the allowed amount, which is common out of network
  • Assignment of benefits: the plan paying the office directly rather than you
  • Out-of-network coinsurance: often a lower percentage than in network

The five questions and why

QuestionWhy it matters
Do you participate in my plan?Sets which rules apply
Do you submit claims, or do I?Paperwork and cash flow
How does your fee compare with the plan's allowed amount, and who pays the gap?Your likely share
Written plan with codes and an estimate?Lets you check with the plan
When is payment due?Whether you pay in full and are reimbursed

Reasons people choose an out-of-network office anyway

A particular approach to care, a clinician they trust, continuity, or a service not available in network. Those are legitimate; the point is to know the arithmetic beforehand.

What to ask the plan

Out-of-network coinsurance by category; how the allowed amount is set; whether assignment of benefits is permitted; whether a predetermination is available for out-of-network care.

This page does not state fees. The studio provides written treatment plans with codes and answers billing questions through its contact page (studio).

Next step: Request a consultation or call (805) 565-5111. A request is not a confirmed appointment; the office confirms times during its listed hours (Monday to Thursday, 8 am to 5 pm, plus select Fridays).
