Why mail-order teeth straightening needs a careful safety review
Because moving teeth is a medical treatment. The American Dental Association and the American Association of Orthodontists discourage orthodontic treatment that begins without an in-person examination and x-rays, and the FDA has stated that it has not authorized clear aligners for sale directly to consumers without a prescription and supervision by a dentist or orthodontist. A careful review means confirming who examines you, who diagnoses, who supervises each stage, and who you can see if something goes wrong.
What an in-person examination finds that a photo cannot
Gum disease and bone levels, decay, cracked or heavily restored teeth, root shape and length, how the bite meets, and jaw joint symptoms. Moving teeth through diseased gum or thin bone can cause recession or loosen teeth; moving a tooth with an unknown root can shorten it. The ADA advises an examination before orthodontic treatment (ADA).
What the evidence shows
User surveys report satisfaction for many people, alongside a minority who report bite changes, gum problems or results that did not match the plan, with limited ability to get care when things went wrong. Published clinical studies on remote-only models are few.
Questions that make up a safety review
- Who examines my mouth in person before treatment starts?
- Who takes and reads x-rays?
- Who is the named licensed dentist responsible for my case, and can I contact them?
- How often is my progress checked, and by whom?
- What happens if a tray does not fit or a tooth hurts?
- Is my bite being planned, or only my front teeth?
- What retention is provided afterward?
If you have already started
Book an examination with a dentist; bring your plan and trays. Report pain, loose teeth, bleeding gums or a bite that no longer meets. Treatment can often be reviewed and, where needed, taken over.
