Eating and drinking with clear aligners: the practical questions

Published October 20, 2026

In short

Trays come out for all meals and for every drink except plain water. Nothing is off the menu, but the trays have to be out and the teeth clean before they go back in.

Why

A tray holds liquid against enamel, so sugary or acidic drinks sipped with trays in can raise the risk of decay and white spots. Hot drinks can warp the plastic; colored drinks stain it. The American Dental Association advises keeping teeth clean during orthodontic treatment to avoid decay and white marks (ADA).

The wear-hour budget

Most plans ask for trays in about 22 hours a day. Three meals and two snacks at 20 minutes each already use nearly two hours. Grazing all day breaks the budget; set mealtimes keep it. Studies of compliance link lower wear time with slower, less predictable movement.

Common situations

SituationWhat to do
Plain waterFine with trays in
Sparkling or flavored waterTrays out; it is acidic
Coffee or teaTrays out; hot and staining
AlcoholTrays out; sugary and acidic
Sports or energy drinksTrays out; rinse before reinserting
Chewing gumTrays out; it sticks to plastic
SnacksTrays out; count the minutes
Taking medicationTrays out if chewable or syrup; a swallowed tablet with water is fine
A long dinner outTrays in a case, not a napkin; brush or rinse before reinserting

Cleaning before reinsertion when there is no sink

Rinse with water, drink plain water, reinsert, and brush as soon as you can. Fluoride toothpaste twice a day and cleaning between teeth daily remain the baseline (NIDCR).

The case

Trays wrapped in a napkin get thrown away. Keep the case in your pocket or bag.

Next step: Request a consultation or call (805) 565-5111. A request is not a confirmed appointment; the office confirms times during its listed hours (Monday to Thursday, 8 am to 5 pm, plus select Fridays).
