How to clean aligners without damaging them
Rinse trays every time they come out, brush them gently with a soft brush and a mild, non-abrasive cleaner (not toothpaste, which can scratch), and soak as your dentist recommends. Never use hot or boiling water, which warps the plastic.
Why cleaning matters
Biofilm builds on trays within hours and sits against your teeth and gums for most of the day. Studies find that brushing plus a soaking agent removes more than either alone, and that no home method sterilizes a tray, so the goal is clean, not sterile.
What damages trays
- Heat: hot water, dishwashers, a car dashboard
- Abrasive toothpaste and hard brushes, which scratch and cloud the plastic
- Colored mouthwash, which stains
- Bleach-type agents at the wrong strength; some change color or surface roughness in studies
- Chewing on trays, or using them as a night guard for grinding
Daily and weekly routine
Daily: rinse on removal; brush trays with a soft brush and clear mild soap or the recommended cleaner; rinse; store dry in the case when not in the mouth; brush and floss your teeth before reinserting (NIDCR).
Weekly, or as directed: soak in the cleaning solution your dentist recommends for the time stated on its label.
When trays smell or cloud
Smell means biofilm; clean more often and check your own brushing. Clouding is usually scratches or mineral deposits; a soak may help, and the next tray in the series is coming anyway.
Retainers
The same rules apply to clear retainers, which are worn for years rather than weeks, so they deserve the full routine. The American Dental Association notes that orthodontic appliances need daily cleaning to protect teeth and gums (ADA).
Next step: Request a consultation or call (805) 565-5111. A request is not a confirmed appointment; the office confirms times during its listed hours (Monday to Thursday, 8 am to 5 pm, plus select Fridays).
