How to tell your dental team that an aligner does not fit

Published October 20, 2026

In short

A new aligner is usually snug and may feel tight for a day or two. A fit problem is a visible gap between the tray edge and a tooth, a tray that will not seat fully, one that rocks, or one that is suddenly loose. Describe which tooth, which arch, how big the gap looks, how long it has been there, and your wear hours, and send a clear photo if the office accepts them.

Normal versus not normal

ExpectedWorth reporting
Tightness and pressure for 1-3 days after a changeA gap between tray and tooth that persists after several days of full wear
Mild aching when bitingPain on one tooth that is sharp or getting worse
A tray that needs firm pressure to seatA tray that rocks, will not seat, or is suddenly loose
Slight rough edgeA cracked or warped tray
An attachment that has come off

Why trays stop tracking

Wear time under the prescribed hours, changing trays early, movements that are less predictable (rotations, extrusion, intrusion), a lost attachment, an unexpected tooth problem, or a tray that was warped by heat. The American Dental Association notes that aligners must be worn as directed to work (ADA).

What the office may ask you to do

Use "chewies" to seat the tray, go back to the previous tray, continue the current tray longer, come in for a check, or re-scan for a refinement. Do not skip ahead or trim the tray yourself.

How to describe it

Upper or lower; which tooth (count from the front, left or right); where the gap is (biting edge, gum edge, front, back); size (a hair, a grain of rice); when it started; tray number; hours worn per day.

Photo tips

Natural light, dry lips pulled back, tray seated as far as it goes, one straight-on shot and one from the side of the gap.

Next step: Request a consultation or call (805) 565-5111. A request is not a confirmed appointment; the office confirms times during its listed hours (Monday to Thursday, 8 am to 5 pm, plus select Fridays).
